About Me

My photo
I love drawing, you can usually find me on sumo-paint, photoshop of with a note-book doodling! I also love painting. I have my nose in a book all the time too and love western style horseback riding! I also roleplay all the time, online. My favorite place to roleplay is WarriorCat RPG and WolfHome. In my free time I love playing, learning about and caring for dogs! I want to become a veterinarian and dog trainer when I get older. I am taking a vet tech course online and love dogs. I also love swimming, so you can find me in a pool sometimes!

Dog Sport! Agility!

We all know about, soccer, basket-ball and other human sports. But, did you know, there is plenty dog sports! They are super fun ways to stimulate your pets brain, be active (Both for you and your pet!) and get to bond with your canine friend. I will be telling you about a dog sport a day, todays dog sport is.....
Agility!
I can say, this is one of the most fun and most popular canine sports. Agility is a sport were a handler directs a dog through a obstacle course. It's aimed for time and accuracy. But the trick is, the dog runs off leash, the handler can not touch the dog nor the obstacles or use treats/toys as a incentive. The handler directs the dog with voice and movement.
The obstacles: A-Frame, it's to long borders, usually about 3 feet wide, 8 to 9 feet long and hinged together at the top to form a upside down V, or A with no line in the middle. The bottom 36 to 42 inches are painted in a bright color, usually red or yellow. That is the contact zone, the dog must start running up the A-Frame from this point and not getting off till touching the last contact zone.
Dog Walk, three 8 to 12 feet planks, 9 to 12 inches wide connected at the end. The center plank is 4 feet above the ground so that the two end planks form ramps leading up and down the center plank. The Dog Walk also has a contact point at the ends like the A-Frame.
Teeter-Totter, is a 10 to 12 foot plank pivoting on a fulcrum, much like a child's seesaw. It is constructed slightly off balance so the same end always returns to the ground. This has contact zones.
Crossover, is a 4 foot high, 3 by 3 foot square platform, with ramps similar to a Dog Walk descending from the center of 3 or 4 sides. The dog must ascend the correct ramp and descend the ramp indicated by the handler, possible changing directions to do so. This obstacle had largely been discontinued due to it's cumbersome size and danger of dogs falling off. No major agility organization in the United States allows the crossover.
Tunnel, it is a vinyl tube, 10 to 20 feet long and 2 feet in diameter, through which the dog runs. The tunnel is constructed of vinyl and wire, so that it can be configured in a strait line or curved.
Collapsed Tunnel, it is a barrel like cylinder with a tube of fabric attached to one end. The fabric extends about 8 to 12 feet and lies closed until the dog runs through the open end of the chute and pushes his way out through the fabric tube.

Dog of the Day! Belle

The dog of the day is Belle! When her owner Kevin Weaver collapsed from a diabetic seizure she literally bit "911" into his cell-phone! Weaver said, "there's no doubt in my mind that I'd be dead if I didn't have Belle", She is the first canine to win the VITA's Wireless Samaritan Award. Belle had been trained to bite down on a phone's keypad in the event of a emergency.

Dogs do many amazing things every day! They have saved people, guided and watched. Dogs have been at are side for as long as man has been living in civilizations. Lets thanks all the dogs like Belle!

Purebred Dogs, Are They Healthy?

There are many breeds of dogs. From the huge Great-Dane, to the agile Australian Shepherd and small Rat Terrier. But due to resent research they are extremely unhealthy and the AKC have very low standards for health. Highly respected breeders cull Rhodesian Ridgeback pups that are "Ridgeless" because they can not be shown in the show ring. The ridge in Rhodesian Ridgebacks can cause a skin disorder were a tiny hole forms under the ridge that burrows deep into the dogs spin, killing or paralyzing him. From inbreeding all large breeds are in very high risk of Hip-Displacia. The King Charles Spaniel have a amazingly high risk to a deadly and very painful brain disorder. Many puppies are culled everyday by respected breeders because they do not meet the breed standards. Gene pools for purebred dogs are very small and unhealthy. Most breeders breed grandsonXgrandpa, fatherXdaughter and sometimes even, brotherXsister. Also, purebreds not very smart. Most breeders do not breed for mind, they breed for health. Please, do not support big breeders who cull small pups just because they look "ugly". Do not support inbreeding. Adopt your dogs, get pure mutts who have a fresh gene pool.

Home-Made Toys!

I bet every dog owner had that moment when they wanted to buy the latest toy for there dog, but it cost so much! Or when we had to leave are canine friend home alone for a few hours with not much to do. We can easily avoid these problems if you learn how to made cheap dogs toys that will stimulate your dogs brain when you are not there and are cheap!
Water Bottle Treat-
Take a empty water bottle and poke holes in it. Fill it up with dog treats that crunch easily and then put the cap on the water bottle tightly. Watch your dog chew on the bottle and as the treats crunch up inside, fall out through the holes. Now, when you give this to your dog you should watch them as they play. If the bottle gets ripped to much your canine pal may choke. Another thing you can do is tie the treat filled bottle to a low tree branch so your dog can not chew on it but has fun jumping and nocking the treats out. If you want your dog to play with it this way you should make the holes bigger.
Socks and More-
Materials you will need:
1. Nice-sized paper bag
2. Some toilet or paper towel roll tubes (Just the tubes!)
3. Socks
4. Treats/Cloth
5. String
Rip off some paper from the bag and stuff it inside the tube. You can add treats or a piece of old cloth into the tubes too. That way one of your dogs favorite smells will be inside the tube with the fun crunchy paper. Use 2-4 tubes full of paper and treats/cloth, put them in a sock and tie the sock closed tightly with string. Socks are harder to rip so it is safer to leave your dog alone with this fun toy. You can play tug-of-war with your dog or if you need to go some place for a while leave your dog with this crunchy, fun smelling toy!
Sock 'n' Ball-
Take a tennis ball or tennis ball size squeaky toy and place it at the toe end of the sock. Tie a knot right above the ball to keep it inside. Watch as the ball bounces (Or squeaks!) as your dog runs around the room and chews it. I have to say cheapest, easiest and handiest dog toy you can make!
Empty Cuddle Fun-
Take a old toy, or buy a cheap used one and cut it down the middle. Remove all stuffing then sew it back up. Dogs will love playing tug-of-war with it, tossing it around, playing fetch with it or just cuddling! They are very hardy toys and cheap. They sell toys like this at pet stores but they cost a lot and do not last long. If you want, after you take the stuffing out and before you sew the cuddle toy up, you can add your dogs favorite bone or a squeaky toy. If you add the your dogs bone he will likely rip it up in a few days, but it will be tons of fun and great smells! If you add a squeaky toy your dog will have more fun throwing it around and hearing it squeak plus bounce. If you have a hunting breed of dog they will like the squeaky toy kind because it will be like prey as it bounces and squeaks. It will up your dogs prey drive and they will have more fun!
Big Knot-
Take one long strip of fabric and keep on tying it in till it is a huge knot! Your canine friend will have fun pouncing on it and chewing it.
Big Knot Freeze-
This is a added version to "Big Knot" make the "Big Knot" then soak it in water (Beef stock if your feeling generous,) then put it in the freezer for a hour. When you take it out it will be frozen, your dog will have extra fun chewing at it! This is a great way to keep your teething puppy from chewing everything. You can also just soak a towel in water/beef stock for your teething puppy. Freeze the towel like the knot so your puppy can chew it easier then the knot.
Crackling Sock-
Take a plastic water bottle and squeeze all the air out of it. Put it in a sock and tie the sock closed. Your dog will love the crackling sound it makes when he chews and plays with it. Dogs also love the texture of crackling things. Your friend will have hours of fun playing with this hardy toy!

Have Fun!!!!
These are easy ways to keep your dog entertained, mentally and physically. This will give you a break from taking care of your canine pal, while knowing they are having a blast! These are cheap, easy and fun ways to make toys. Know get of the computer and give your dog something to do!
